Care Instructions
You've received your new woven wrap, ring sling or carrier, hooray! What do you do next?
First, inspect it carefully. It is important to look over it thoroughly for any flaws before washing or wearing. Then follow the manufacturers recommendations for washing.
Woven Wraps
Machine woven wraps arrive in loom state and need to be washed before their first use. If there are no instructions from the manufacturer, a guide to basic care by fabric type is below.
Handwoven wraps are usually "finished", which means they have had an initial wash and press before being packaged. They are ready to be worn.
Ring Slings
Ring slings are generally treated like woven wraps. Most arrive in loom state and need to be washed before their first use. Follow the appropriate instructions for the fabric type.
We recommend putting your ring sling in a pillow case or wash bag before washing, or place a large sock over the rings.
Soft Structured Carriers (Tula, Lillebaby, Boba)
Soft structured carriers do not need to be washed before wearing.
If your carrier gets dirty, spot clean when possible. A small amount of dishwashing liquid rubbed into a stain with your finger or a soft cloth is quite effective. Rinse and repeat until the spot is clean.
If a full clean is necessary, you can machine wash with mild detergent on gentle cycle. We recommend closing all buckles and straps and putting your carrier in a pillow case or wash bag before washing to prevent tears or straps catching. Hang dry out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
Suck pads/drool pads are often used on the shoulder straps to keep your straps in good condition. These are easy to remove and can be machine washed as required (or follow the manufacturers washing instructions).
Washing by Fabric Type
Detergents
A gentle liquid laundry detergent with no optical brighteners or fabric softeners is the best option for washing woven wraps. Soap nuts may also be used.
Stain removal
Contact your wrap's manufacturer for specific stain removal advice if possible, especially for delicate fibres. For minor spots, try rubbing a small amount of dishwashing liquid into the stain and rinsing (repeat as necessary until it is clear). Then wash as per normal guidelines for your wrap.
Cotton
Cotton can be washed in cold or warm water in the washing machine on a normal or gentle cycle with low spin.
Line dry or tumble dry on low heat setting.
Steam iron on cotton setting.
Linen
Linen can be washed in cold or warm water in the washing machine on a normal or gentle cycle with low spin. Low spin is especially important as linen is prone to thread shifting.
Line dry or tumble dry on low heat setting until mostly dry. Over drying will cause your linen wrap to stiffen.
Steam iron while slightly damp with lots of steam - this will soften up your linen wrap significantly!
Hemp
Hemp is best washed in warm or hot water in the washing machine on a normal or gentle cycle with low spin.
Line dry or tumble dry on low heat setting. High heat while drying can cause your hemp wrap to shrink.
Steam iron on cotton setting.
Wool
Handwash in lukewarm water. Sudden changes in water temperature may cause felting.
Use only water or a liquid detergent for wool/delicates.
Gently roll dry with towels. Do not wring or spin, wet wool is delicate and prone to felting. Dry flat indoors or in the shade.
Gentle iron on silk setting while slightly damp, without adding steam.
Silk
Handwash in lukewarm water. Hot water may cause silk to shrink, cold water loses the luster of the fibres.
Use only water or a liquid detergent for wool/silk/delicates.
Dry flat indoors or in the shade. Sunlight can cause discolouration.
Gentle iron on silk setting while slightly damp, without adding steam.
Repreve
Repreve should be washed in cold water in the washing machine on a normal or gentle cycle with low spin.
Line dry or tumble dry on "air dry" setting.
If ironing is absolutely necessary, use the polyester setting on your iron. Your Repreve wrap should not need ironing, shaking it out is usually enough.
Repreve does not like heat and can melt under high heat settings.
Seacell
Seacell can be washed in the washing machine up to 30 degreesC on a normal or gentle cycle with low spin.
Line dry or tumble dry on "air dry" setting.
Gentle iron on cotton setting.
Tencel
Tencel can be washed in the washing machine up to 30 degreesC on a normal or gentle cycle with low spin.
Line dry or tumble dry on "air dry" setting.
Gentle iron on cotton setting.
